Albania

We first arrived in Tirana, Albania from Podgorica, Montenegro by bus, we were immediately struck by two things: the fascinating blend of architecture, a testament to the country’s long and varied history and yet how terrible the state of the city bus station was!

You see, Albania is a fascinating place which has had many rulers, from the ancient Illyrians to the Ottoman empire and the Italians who occupied its lands too. Albania’s past is visible in its streets and buildings, where historical architecture in varying design stands proudly alongside modern skyscrapers, yet we couldn't help but notice how worn and decrepit the main city bus station was, it was quite the opposite from what the city had to offer which was a surprise to us!

What surprised us even more however, was how modern and developed the capital city Tirana felt, with towering buildings and bustling streets. Yet, just beyond the urban landscape, majestic mountains stretched across the horizon, offering breathtaking views.

The warm hospitality of the locals, delicious food, and the affordability of Albania made it an unforgettable destination on our journey and we are sure to come back and visit in the future too!
