Bydgoszcz

Day One:

Our return to Poland was motivated by a desire for redemption after our earlier poor-quality videos from our first visits to Kraków and Oświęcim. This time, we were determined to capture the essence of the country and showcase its hidden gems, starting with Bydgoszcz. We invited Tammy’s brother, Kyle, to join us on this adventure. He had expressed a wish to travel more but wasn’t keen on going solo. Having previously taken him to Austria and Slovakia, we knew he would enjoy the lively atmosphere of Poland, so we offered him the opportunity to explore Bydgoszcz with us.

After arriving quite late on our first day, we hopped on a bus to our apartment. However, we encountered a bit of a challenge finding our way to check-in. Thankfully, we met a friendly guy from Russia who lived in the area. Despite the language barrier, we managed to communicate through Google Translate, which helped us navigate our way into the building.

Once we unpacked and settled in, we dashed over to a nearby Żabka convenience store just minutes before it closed. We stocked up on snacks, Bob couldn’t resist grabbing a microwave chicken Kiev meal with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, which turned out to be a delightful choice, Kyle went for a carbonara and Tammy went for a hefty baguette, great for our second visit to Poland!

Our cosy apartment provided the perfect setting to rest and recharge for the adventures that awaited us in Bydgoszcz.

Day Two:

The next day, we ventured into the heart of Bydgoszcz, eager to explore its charming old town. As we strolled through the picturesque streets, we were immediately captivated by the unique architecture and vibrant atmosphere. The colourful buildings and scenic canals created a delightful backdrop for our day of exploration. One of the surprises was how few tourists we encountered; it was unexpected in a city as beautiful and rich in history as Bydgoszcz. This lack of crowds added to the charm, allowing us to enjoy the sights at our own pace and appreciate the local culture.

During our exploration, we decided to visit a traditional milk bar, an essential part of Polish culinary culture. The experience was a delightful throwback, offering hearty, homemade dishes at affordable prices. We savoured the local flavours while soaking in the cosy ambiance that these establishments are known for. Our time in Bydgoszcz solidified our belief that this city is underrated and deserves more recognition as a travel destination. The combination of its rich history, unique cuisine, and authentic atmosphere made for an unforgettable experience in this hidden gem of Poland.

After wrapping up our morning vlogging session, we decided to kick off the next segment of our journey by grabbing a refreshing beer. With our spirits lifted, we set off to explore the more residential areas of Bydgoszcz. Our goal was to immerse ourselves in everyday Polish life, and we were eager to discover the local vibe beyond the tourist hotspots.

As we wandered through the charming neighbourhoods, we were struck by the warmth and friendliness of the locals. The streets were lined with cosy cafés and bustling markets, creating an inviting atmosphere that made us feel right at home. One highlight of the day was indulging in a delicious Polish burger from a local eatery. The flavours were exceptional, and enjoying our meal outside allowed us to soak in the lively surroundings and observe the rhythm of daily life in the city.

This leisurely afternoon in Bydgoszcz not only enriched our travel experience but also reinforced our appreciation for the authentic aspects of Polish culture. By stepping off the beaten path, we discovered the heart of the city, creating lasting memories that would inspire our future adventures.

Day Three:

Having spent the 13th in Toruń (you can read about that here) we were now on our final day in Bydgoszcz and indeed Poland as a whole, we prepared for our upcoming seven-hour bus journey to Berlin by soaking in the last bits of the city’s charm. We took a leisurely stroll through the university district, admiring the stunning architecture of the buildings that housed both students and a vibrant academic atmosphere. The mix of historic and modern structures added to the allure, making it a fitting farewell to our time in this underrated Polish city.

After our exploration, we made our way to a local shopping mall, where we treated ourselves to some traditional bakery goods and local dishes. The delicious pastries and hearty meals were the perfect way to savour the flavours of Poland one last time. We also stocked up on supplies for our journey ahead, ensuring we were well-prepared for the long trip to Germany.

With our bags packed and our hearts full of memories, we settled into the bus station, reflecting on the incredible experiences we had in Bydgoszcz. The city’s rich culture, friendly locals, and unique charm left a lasting impression, making our departure bittersweet as we looked forward to the next leg of our adventure in Berlin.

We were also so glad that we were able to return back to Poland and catch better footage as this wonderful country truly deserves to be shown in its best light! We've had a great response to the videos from this series and the people of Poland have been incredibly supportive and kind, some have even been with us since the journey began almost a year prior and continued to give a huge deal of this support, for this reason, along with Oman we will probably always have a soft spot for Poland in our hearts!❤️🇵🇱
