Mürren

Arriving in Mürren was like stepping into a Christmas postcard. After a short but stunning train ride through the Swiss mountains, we took a brief walk from the mountain train station. We plopped down on a nearby bench to finally eat the sandwich and chocolate we had bought earlier—a much-needed meal after over a day of barely eating due to sky-high prices.

As we shared our simple lunch, we took in the breathtaking surroundings. Everywhere we looked, skiers zipped down the slopes, their colorful gear contrasting against the pristine white snow. We felt a bit out of place since we weren’t there to ski, but the atmosphere was lively and infectious. The mountains stretched majestically into the distance, and we knew we wouldn’t have long to soak it all in, as we had a train to catch.

After lunch, we began our trek down the ski slope track towards Gimmelwald. Dodging skiers zooming past us, we made our way carefully. Bob had to call his bank during the walk because they had blocked his card, thinking it suspicious that payments were being made in Switzerland. It was a bit stressful, but we managed to keep our spirits up despite the slippery, steep path and the daunting drop-off beside us.

When we finally reached Gimmelwald, we headed for the cable car back down. There, we met a lovely lady operating the lift. Bob attempted to speak German, but his mispronunciation ended up sounding a bit rude! Thankfully, she understood what he meant, and we all shared a good laugh about it—one of those delightful moments that makes travel so memorable.

The cable car ride offered spectacular views, including a stunning waterfall cascading down the mountainside. We descended into Stechelberg, where we narrowly missed our bus back to Lauterbrunnen. After a short wait, we finally hopped on the bus and bid farewell to the breathtaking Alps.

This trip to Mürren was one of the most memorable experiences we had ever shared, and it left an indelible mark on our hearts. The wild contrast was almost surreal; just a month later, we found ourselves in the desert city of Muscat in Oman. The stark difference between the snowy mountains of Switzerland and the sandy landscapes of Oman was a testament to the diverse adventures travel offers.

As we took the train back to Basel, we reflected on our journey, already looking forward to our last day in Switzerland which you can read about here.
